What Rugby Is Not Print

Organized Mayhem : A referee, whose word is final, controls the matches. On the field, he or she is addressed only as Sir or Ma'am and only by the team captains.

An Eighty Minute Brawl : Misconduct and dangerous play are not tolerated. Anyone expelled from a match for misconduct is brought before the disciplinary commitee of the local rugby unions. Sportsmanship is a very important element in rugby.

An Excuse to Drink Beer : Gone are the days when a rugby match was primarily a prelude to the party. Today's rugby players are disciplined and highly competitive athletes.

A Good Way to Become Cripple : Many people are surprised when they learn that football's injury rate is three times greater than rugby's. The absence of helmets and padding actually lessens the chance of injury. Without these "weapons", participants must play in a more controlled, less violent manner. Rugby is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport.
